Garage Heater Buying Guide (Electric Hardwired)
Size a hardwired electric garage heater by wattage, mount type, and circuit capacity for workshops and bays. Wattage bands, circuit planning, mount patterns, and safety clearances for real workshops.

Hardwired garage heaters are building equipment, not camping gear. The buy decision is as much electrical service and airflow pattern as it is nameplate wattage.
This guide covers wattage bands, mounting, controls, and when kerosene forced-air or diesel air heat is the wrong comparison set entirely.
Wattage bands that match bay size
Around 5,000W can serve small one-car bays with decent insulation. 7,500W is a common two-car class in moderate climates. 10,000W appears in larger shops—only after you confirm breaker, wire gauge, and panel capacity.
Oversizing without controls just short-cycles and still leaves cold corners if throw pattern is wrong.
Electrical planning before checkout
Hardwired units need correct circuit sizing and disconnects per local code. If you are not comfortable in a panel, budget an electrician as part of the equipment cost.
Do not assume a “garage outlet” can run a 240V heater. Read voltage on the PDP twice.
Mounting and air throw
Ceiling mounts free wall space; wall mounts can direct heat along vehicle flanks. Keep clearances from doors, openers, and stored solvents.
Heat rises—aim airflow to wash the occupied zone, not only the peak of the ceiling.
Controls and operating cost mindset
Thermostats and timers stop heating an empty bay all Tuesday afternoon. Remotes help when your hands are greasy.
Electric heat is clean indoors; operating cost tracks local kWh rates. Compare that honestly to fuel systems rather than pretending electricity is free.
Forced-air kerosene and other jobsite heat
Torpedo-style kerosene units heat ventilated jobsites quickly. They are not bedroom heaters. CO and fresh air are mandatory topics, not footnotes.
